Yes, you do type the diacritic after the letter. And that's exactly why you sometimes need the backslash. But I'm not sure what your second question is asking. VIQR is just a representation of quốc ngữ, which is Vietnamese. Nothing gets translated. Now, there are some programs out there (I made one for personal use) that can automatically convert VIQR text into correctly accented quốc ngữ as you type. – Minh Nguyễn 15:28, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the answer. Are some of those programs free? Is it possible to give download adresses? I just have an idea (but I am not a programmer so it may be irrealistic): in order to promote the edition of the vi articles for vietnamese people from other countries, would it be possible to have a tag such as <viqr>...</viqr> that would translate the VIQR, such as the <math>...</math> tag? You can download a program that supports VIQR here. VIQR was created in pre-Unicode days where text displays were in ASCII, thus it was not possible to display letters not in the ASCII code. In the vi articles I suggested adding one of those scripts to the input box to allow Vietnamese input without the aid of third-party software, but it seems that the admins weren't listening.

I recently added a special characters box to the edit pages at vi:. It's similar to the one at en:, but in a grid fashion like the Windows Character Map, since Vietnamese has so many non-ASCII characters. Character encoding

Mjb moved this article under the character sets category, but it really isn't. It more closely fits the definition of a character encoding than that of a character set. Actually, it's more of an input method editor. Just as with the Japanese IME for Windows, for example, most characters you type in require more than one keystroke. Two diacritics at once

What about one vowel character having two diacritic signs in the same time? Like Ứ or Ắ. I think the article needs such examples. Hellerick (talk) 05:25, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

I've tweaked the example somewhat to include stacked diacritics. In the strictest interpretation of VIQR, accent marks like + and ( probably have to come before tone marks like ', but modern input method editors are much more flexible.
