The son of an Air Force pilot, Wilber graduated from high school in Lincoln, Nebraska. He studied pre-med at Duke, doing graduate work in microbiology.

Wilber has been married three times. His second wife, Treya Killam, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her treatment and death was the subject of Wilber’s book Grace and Grit. Wilber’s third wife, Marcy, is now married to musician Stuart Davis.
