The so-called "flag of Northern Cyprus", is a non existing flag, because it represents a non-existing country!

No. Can't you see it? It's up there. North of the island. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. ;)

Should this article be called flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus instead? dbenbenn | talk 23:15, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There is only one state in Cyprus, the Cyprus Republic which is member state of the E.U. since 2004 and member state of the U.N.

This flag represent a fake state that doesnt exist. The so called trnc is just a muppet state of Turkey who controls the occupied area of the north part of Cyprus Republic.

Turkey and not the muppet state trnc, rules the occupied area of the north part of Cyprus Republic with 50.000 turkish troops as the European Court of Human Rights decided in the Loizidou vs Turkey case in 1996.

Turkey illigally invaded Cyprus Republic in 20 of July 1974 in order to establish a huge milittary base in the northern part of Cyprus Republic.

Guys, this is not a place to do politics or to prove your point, you may have your views, we have ours, truth is that many Turkish Cypriots (the "useless minority" you tried to massacre in pursuing your "Hellenic Ambitions", right?) consider this flag as their Nation's, so I don't see why it should be discussed further. Thanks. --Eae1983 (talk) 01:33, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

THIS FLAG (90% IDENTICAL TO TURKISH ONE ) SYMBOLIZES THE FORCED TURKIFICATION UPON TURKISH CYPRIOTS

WHY THE GREEK CYPRIOTS DID NOT PUT A BLUE CROSS? BUT CONTINUED TO HAVE THE CYPRIOT FLAG?

There is no Turkification upon Turkish Cypriots. They are allready Turkish from the beginning ;) Red symbolises the martyrs blood during the liberation of North Cyprus. It is your problem to add blue colours or not, Greeks. It is may be blue symbolises nothing unique. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.255.14.222 (talk) 10:58, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

80 sq. km???

[edit]

I would just like to point out that a flag ~500 m long by ~200 m wide adds up to roughly 0.1 km2. Someone's math is seriously off.

Who said that? It's actually 440mx214m that makes 94160 square meters. --Eae1983 (talk) 02:04, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kyrenia Range & More Contributions

[edit]

1) What does this: "... It is also considered by Greek Cypriots as offensive not only to the environment but also their own community and as an act of provocation.[1]", especially the latter part, have to do with the Kyrenia range, and offer in terms of a reliable source, that: "The local use of the Turkish flag together with the TRNC flag is similar to the use of the Greek flag on the rest of the island. [2][3]" does not?

Would it be suitable to provide three separate sections describing 1) the use of the flag on the Kyrenia range, 2) the use of the flag locally, and 3) controversies/legal challenges, to better organise the context of these parts?

Are there any suggestions for where or if this sort of information might fit in, as well as some good sources for it: after the Republic of Cyprus was initially founded there was no official flag; at first the two separate communities would use the flags of Greece and Turkey respectively, before the competition was held to design a new flag, which culminated in the Flag of Cyprus, and after the coup etc and the forming of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the new flag was designed so as not to use the old flag which is associated with, in their eyes, just the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus? What are everyone's thoughts?

These are just a few passionate suggestions which I think could do this article justice by expanding it plentifully. Are there any other ideas for such contributions? Thanks! Nargothronde (talk) 00:53, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. I forgot to mention, also, adding a Background section might also be a good idea. Any thoughts? Thanks! Nargothronde (talk) 00:55, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just a very quick response before I go away for a while:
  • The environmental hazard / provocation is specifically about the mountain flag.
  • The two given sources do not really support the "similar use" sentence. Also, the sources are rather blog-like.
  • The suggested text about the Cyprus flag is irrelevant. It is also inaccurate, since the Cyprus flag was ready for 16 August 1960, when independence was declared.
  • What "Background"? The background of the flag is white, but I guess that is not what you mean. --T*U (talk) 07:05, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nargothronde and TU-nor, yes it should be clear that the "Kyrenia Range" section is about the flag carved on the mountain, not the flag in general. Nargothronde, I agree it would be good to expand the article with more details. I don't see a problem adding usage information into another section, that for example the Turkish flag is flown together with the TRNC flag in the north, while the Greek flag is flown together with the flag of Cyprus in the south, and some neutrally-worded explanation of why that is. It should have a citation to a reliable source such as a newspaper or reputably published book, as self-published websites are generally not reliable. The problem with "similar to the use of the Greek flag" is that it's a general statement that doesn't explain what the actual use is, and also seems to imply that the status of the two sets of flags are the same, which is not the case.
With regard to the new suggestion, as TU-nor noted, there was an official flag already at the founding. Also it's best to avoid making broad statements that interpret motivations, eg. about why the flag was designed, or what "in their eyes" people[who?] think. If such things are explained, they must come from reliable sources. Most questions can be answered by answering the question: "what do the majority of reliable, independent sources say?" and then putting that information into the article without adding any interpretation or analysis. Verifiable facts about events that have taken place are preferable to value judgements or statements that infer why people do things, even if sourced, as the latter tend to be less neutral, especially if they are generalizations about what large groups of people think. For example, see the change I just made of the wording about "considered by Greek Cypriots as offensive" to a specific statement by MEP Papadopoulou. I also removed the part "toxic materials ... liable to leakage" as the source doesn't say that. A simple rule of thumb for all: "don't just make shit up". :) --IamNotU (talk) 12:00, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice T*U and IamNotU. Nargothronde (talk) 00:23, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
T*U about * no. 3: it came into use in 16 August 1960, that's right, but I was trying to refer to before the flag was introduced, where the flags of Greece and Turkey were used, and now, where both the flags of Greece and Turkey are used beside the two communities' flags, respectively. And about * no. 4, I meant "Background" as in Design, Creation, History, Other Uses etc, i.e. a background of the flag's creation, how it was designed and why, why it exists, why the Republic of Cyprus flag wasn't used etc Nargothronde (talk) 00:23, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
IamNotU these are all really helpful points, and I do see that change you did there. I'll take these suggestions away and come back with some substantial contributions. Thanks! Nargothronde (talk) 00:23, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This article is racist for existing in this context.

[edit]

Sad to see Wikipedia have such low morals and standards, everyone knows there is no such country as Northern Cyprus, it's just a foreign occupation in the Cypriot real Cyprus. Which has also caused the consequence of the UN occupation buffer zone. Please don't try to give the evil crime legitimacy. This flag is a fantasy flag at the most, not the flag of a country.
