History section

[edit]

I added quite a bit of additional info and citations today. The section after the war is pretty short. Not sure if you want more detail or not.

A quick way to check as to what might be covered is to review this Chronology from the year 2000: http://www.kingstonhistoricalsociety.ca/chronology.html

Chronology of the History of Kingston - Enlarged and revised by Jennifer McKendry from a chronology written for An Illustrated Guide to Monuments, Memorials & Markers (Kingston, 2000) by John H. Grenville, David C. Kasserra, Jennifer McKendry, William J. Patterson and Edward H. Storey for the Kingston Historical Society.

Should I add some of the more recent history items?

Peter K Burian (talk) 20:24, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What you did so far looks great; I'll look it over when I get a chance. Some of the more recent stuff in the chronology seems more "newsy" than encyclopedic, and not terribly notable enough to be included in a WP article. Bottom line is that content should be notable. And we need to steer clear of superfluous intricate details. BC  talk to me 01:32, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; you are closer to this article than I am, so will be guided by your views. Peter K Burian (talk) 01:39, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Add section about Hospitals?

[edit]

e.g. Providence Care Hospital is one of the first hospitals in North America to fully integrate long-term specialized mental health care with physical rehabilitation, complex care and palliative care in one building. https://news.ontario.ca/mohltc/en/2017/05/new-state-of-the-art-hospital-now-open-in-kingston.html Peter K Burian (talk) 18:11, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Equidistant

[edit]

Should we mention that Kingston is equidistant between Toronto and Montreal? 2600:100C:A20C:6C0F:4E6:2E5C:E0F3:8368 (talk) 18:25, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not necessary unless there's a good reason to include this info. And, according to Globefeed's distance calculator (driving), Kingston really isn't "equidistant" from the two cities anyway. Distance would also vary for flying, or train.- BC  talk to me 01:07, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of Cataraqui

[edit]

I first boated on the Cataraqui River part of the Rideau Canal in 1968. I have never heard it pronounced -kway but always -kee, until recently on CBC Radio. The lock masters always say -kee. The major writers on the Rideau and Cataraqui always say -kee. Everyone I ever met who owned shoreline property says -kee. What illiterates are saying -kway? That's like people mispronouncing coyote as coy-oat. Wiley Coyote's first name rhymes with his last. What is the source for this "generally pronounced" assertion? It's changing to rhyme with Gananoque? They're not even spelled the same. You may have noticed that the word quay is also pronounced kee; in fact in Florida they actually changed the spelling to key. But Americans often mispronounce buoy as boo-ee rather than boy. They do talk about something being boy-ant or -unt, rather than boo-ee-ant, though. SmarterAlec (talk) 23:55, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm from Kingston and have never heard it pronounced "Catarakee". It's either "...kway or sometimes ...kwee. BTW, coyote can be pronounced both ways. The pronunciation can be a two-syllable word (with the final "e" silent) and as three-syllables (with the final "e" pronounced). Out here in Alberta, we pronounce it mainly coy-oat (see the Coyote WP article).-- BC  talk to me 05:20, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
