Ref 15 is all wrong - please fix - I don't understand what was done wrong. Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 01:43, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Never any mention of whodunnit, IP? It was wrong because you had just got it wrong. And you would have read cite news: Check date values in: |date= (help) (though in different colors), which unsurprisingly means that the values (or value) provided for "date" were (or was) unusable. The date provided: "29 March 20022". How could this be more understandable? -- Hoary (talk) 02:15, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please check ref number. 3 in the article above - is it OK? Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 02:20, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Srbernadette, this exact problem has been talked about multiple times on this help desk for many years. Another editor has fixed it for you, but I would ask you to ask yourself why the ref threw an error like the many other times you came to ask the same question with a different skin. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:29, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The above was explained to this user several months back at User talk:115.70.23.77#Help Desk questions, but it seems to have been going on for years. For awhile the questions stopped so I assumed they just figured things out; recently, though, they've started back up again essentially posting the same type of "Please fix this. I don't know what's wrong" questions as before. In most cases, these appear to be self-inflicted wounds that could easily be avoided if the user just slowed down and checked their edits before clicking "Publish changes". Errors in reference citation syntax are, I'm pretty sure, indicated at the top of the editing window after clicking "Show preview"; so, it doesn't seem to be too much to ask for this user check their work and then fix things themselves. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs help every now and then, but this has become too regular of an occurrence (at least in my opinion) and isn't inspiring confidence in this user's ability to avoid making similar mistakes moving forward.
Another issue is that they also seem to be constantly switching between editing while logged in and editing while logged out. While this isn't expressly prohibited per se, it too seems to have been going on for years, and there's no indication of it stopping anytime soon despite this user having already been blocked once for inappropriately using multiple accounts. At some point, people might start to question whether this user really has the competence to edit, and whether whatever positives they may be providing to the project outweigh their apparent inability to learn from their mistakes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:23, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Awards listed in articles

[edit]

Hi, this is a general question on which I'd be grateful for some input.

One piece of information that COI users (whether disclosed or undisclosed) often want to include into their articles are lists of awards. Sometimes these awards are clearly significant (such as those which already have Wikipedia articles of their own), sometimes they clearly are not (such as local awards, awards that were awarded to large numbers of individuals (or companies) every year, industry awards which are sometimes no more than paid-for accolades, etc.).

Distinguishing between the two categories above is often rather difficult and would require significant industry knowledge or academic awareness of the relevant field, which will often be beyond the ability of the average volunteer, even after conducting a Google search for the relevant award.

My question is whether there are any guidelines on what type of awards can and can't included in an article, beyond those contained in the draft proposal here [1] or (if not) any general principles that can be applied when dealing with COI edit requests to include such material. Also, what is the exact status of the draft proposal in terms of whether the contents can be implemented without objection?

To give an example, the proposal states The absolute minimum standard for inclusion of any award or accolade in an article or list is: The award or accolade must have been reported in a reliable source independent of the recipient or promoters of the award. In my experience, if that principle were to be universally applied it would result in the removal of the great majority of industry/academic awards currently detailed in Wikipedia articles.

Any assistance provided here would be very much appreciated. Axad12 (talk) 07:15, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If I'm working on a biography, I'll mention or list any notable awards that they've won. I won't list anything else, partly out of respect for the subject. Learning that someone won the Mrs Joyful Prize for Raffia Work will not create a good impression in readers.
Even worse is listing not-notable awards that they were considered or shortlisted for but not awarded. The inclusion of these suggests that the creator of the article suspects that the subject isn.t really notable, and is "scraping the bottom of the barrel". Maproom (talk) 07:39, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed 100%, but are there specific notability guidelines for awards contained (or linked) in WP:N? I didn't see them.
I suppose the grey area that I referred to above relates primarily to awards that fall below the level at which the award might have its own Wikipedia article, but where it still may feasibly be of a significant nature in a particular field.
Re: "scraping the bottom of the barrel" to bolster dodgy subject notability, I do agree but I feel that a lot of COI activity is essentially an extension of the subject's vanity. However, just because the subject is vain doesn't mean that some of the awards they've won might not be of significance in their field.
Many academics, for example, are easily notable under WP:PROF despite never having won any type of award. But the awards that academics often do win seem to be of a particularly arcane nature, and sorting the wheat from the chaff in that regard seems almost impossible.
Industry awards, on the other hand, seem to usually be of a rather trivial nature (given that the sheer number of awarding bodies, often just industry magazines, is huge). If a company were to win (to take a probably made-up example) the UK Construction Magazine award for the most innovative modular housing solution of 2017, my assumption would be that that is not significant or encyclopaedic info. But how is one to tell? Axad12 (talk) 08:02, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some general guidelines I use (which are not codified anywhere, but seem to work well enough): First, is there any verification at all that they even did win such an award? If not, unreferenced material can always be challenged and removed; often these sections are just sprawling "They won this and this and this" without any references at all and can just be removed as unreferenced material. If there is, did any reliable and independent source unaffiliated with both the article subject and the organization which gives the award comment on the significance of the win? If not, then mention of it is very likely undue weight. Seraphimblade Talk to me 08:15, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
True, but in the case of companies, businesspeople and academics the final of those criteria would likely see the removal of the great majority of all awards mentioned in Wikipedia articles. So, do we just conclude that mention of most awards in those fields are simply undue and that awards given to celebrities and sportspeople (extensively covered in reliable sources) are always due? Surely things can't be so simple? Axad12 (talk) 08:29, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My rule of thumb is that I include an award or similar if I a have decent independent source for it, or if the award or at least org behind it has a WP-article, I might include it with a primary source (not the awardee). Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:35, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your general approach (and those detailed above by others) but the problem I will face is essentially as follows:
Suppose a COI edit request details a list of awards that the subject (usually a businessperson or academic) has won and which they would like included in the relevant Wikipedia article. If I go through the awards as you suggest and respond along the lines of "These ones are okay for inclusion, these ones aren't okay" then the COI editor would be perfectly entitled to say "can you point me towards the relevant policy/guidelines on that?" at which point I'd have to admit that there is no real basis for my response and no real grounds for some of the awards to be excluded (unless they are obviously trivial and undue).
Any thoughts on how to navigate that sort of conversation would be appreciated. Axad12 (talk) 08:57, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:PROPORTION? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:08, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair point, but that would require an estimation to be made on whether the inclusion of the awards would be undue weight to minor aspects. Unfortunately whether the awards can reasonably be estimated to be minor or major is the fundamental problem.
I'm getting the impression that there are no real guidelines here and that editors use their own common sense when directly editing articles. Sadly I'm not sure that that will assist when dealing with COI editors who wish to include material using criteria other than common sense (typically their criteria will be dominated by "how impressive will this look?" and "how much can I get away with?"). Axad12 (talk) 09:25, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As is detailed above there is normally no reason to include any award. So if you're asked to provide policy for the awards to include or not, you can probably provide policy that no award is possible and the COI editor has the choice to get some awards into the article or none at all. 176.0.162.62 (talk) 12:18, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I know I used to have an account, but I can't remember the login name. The email address I used will still be the same. How do I regain access to my old account? Or will I need to cancel my donation. Create a new account and then start a new donation. 82.163.190.20 (talk) 08:37, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The donation process is not connected to your account in any way. Doing so would, in fact, violate your privacy. You may donate if you have an account or if you do not have an account. The donation process is handled by the Wikimedia Foundation which actually collects the donations, we editors have nothing to do with it. Inquires about donations should be made to donate@wikimedia.org.
If you did not have an email address in your account preferences, there is no way to regain access to your account and you will need to create a new account. You may identify it as a successor to your old account("I am User5678, I was previously User1234 but lost access") 331dot (talk) 08:40, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you do have an account and you did store an email address (which is optional) and you can still receive mail at the address then you can use Special:PasswordReset to get the username and a temporary password. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:26, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you ever edit any Wikipedia articles? if not, then you can ignore your old lost account entirely. If you did ever edit articles, then you may still abandon that old account by doing nothing, or you can try to look at the edits on the page history of articles you edited to see if you recognize your old login name. If you can find your old login name (we call it your "user name") you can request a password reset to be sent to the associated email address. -Arch dude (talk) 15:08, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an article for an upcoming artist

[edit]

So basically im writing a wiki page for an Indian growing Artist, I had previously written and got the webpage removed entirely in terms of promotional.. Kindly give me the guidelines on how to not get this issue and to keep the webpage same without removal. Thanks in advance Timeless Scholar (talk) 12:27, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your use of the phrases "upcoming artist" and "growing artist" indicates that it is far too soon for an article about this artist(musician? Your account has no orher edits so I don't know who you wrote about). Wikipedia is the last place to write about a topic, not the first. Once this person "arrives" and is noticed by independent reliable sources that then give them significant coverage, they may then meet the notability criteria to merit an article. 331dot (talk) 12:33, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I dont know why it doesnt show but he is not far too soon, Upcoming as in he is an artist and has done works but i meant upcoming for the phrase of becoming a top artist Timeless Scholar (talk) 12:49, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Interface question - missing vertical scroll bar in preview

[edit]

When I am not logged out in, there's an edit summary box at the bottom and when I click preview, it works fine. When I'm logged in, I will get a pop-up after I push publish, then have the "preview" and "publish" button within the popup. The problem is that when I push "preview", the vertical scroll bar is missing. There is a container/rail, but the tab in it is missing, so I can't grab it and scroll and I have to use the scroll wheel on the mouse or arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll. What settings is causing this? Graywalls (talk) 21:23, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Graywalls: I'm trying to understand your scenario. "not logged out" is the same as logged in. Did you mean "not logged in"? You only mention "push publish" in one of the situations. Did you mean "push preview"? What does the mentioned pop-up look like? Does it work if you select "Always enable safe mode" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? It's just for testing and not a suggested solution. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:45, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops. Graywalls (talk) 04:10, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Tried it. Made no difference. Graywalls (talk) 23:01, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Graywalls: I'm still trying to understand what you describe. Are you saying you "push publish" but it doesn't save, and then you want to preview and scroll instead? I'm confused. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:07, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The scroll thing on the side disappears in the preview screen. Graywalls (talk) 01:17, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tested this and experienced the same issue. Zooming in or out doesn't help, and it looks like the window itself is stretched too much; the Publish changes button is slightly cut off. Maybe the folks over at WP:VPT know more? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:43, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please post clear steps to reproduce. Does it start with push publish as Graywalls said? Is the scroll bar missing from the whole window or the edit box? PrimeHunter (talk) 10:54, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1. Edit an article in source mode.
2. Make an edit.
3. Click Publish changes.
4. Click Show preview in the dialogue box that appears.
5. Observe missing scroll bar element on the right-hand side.
This might just be an issue with Vector 2022; anyone with other skins should test this on their end. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:54, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Makes no difference between Vector classic / 2010 and default. I also experience the clipped button as Tenryuu detailed previously. The blue "Publish changes..." become partially lost into the frame and clipping off about halfway into the last "s". Graywalls (talk) 16:47, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When I click "Publish changes", the edit is saved and the saved page is displayed. I guess you enabled something in preferences. Is it normal you have more steps after clicking "Publish changes"? What does the dialogue box say? Does it only happen in articles? PrimeHunter (talk) 18:26, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Looking at my preferences I've got the 2017 wikitext editor toggled on. It's happening in the talk and Wikipedia spaces as well.
@Graywalls: Try this if you're on a Windows device: press Alt+⇧ Shift+P. I tried this key combination while in source editor and the preview that shows up has a scroll bar. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:01, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have now enabled the 2017 wikitext editor and get the dialogue box. I still didn't see the problem in my standard browser Firefox but I tried Google Chriome and see it there. There are two vertical bars to the right. In Firefox they are side by side and scrolling works normally in the left bar. In Chrome a bar without scrolling is on top of a shorter bar with scrolling which cannot be accessed. The bar on top can be removed with this in your CSS:
html.oo-ui-windowManager-modal-active:not(.oo-ui-windowManager-modal-active-fullscreen) {
scrollbar-gutter: auto !important;
}
However, I don't know whether it removes a useful bar in other circumstances. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:46, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu:, I tried that key combo and it doesn't seem to do anything. @PrimeHunter:, since Chrome holds 2/3 marketshare in desktop browsers globally, I believe this does should get fixed. Graywalls (talk) 00:28, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the only way something like this is allowed at all is if the text is under a PD or compatible Creative Commons license and the text itself is attributed with a template. Even then, it's preferable to rewrite everything to be original to Wikipedia. I'm assuming, though, that isn't what here. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 16:55, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not really a structured database, but our sister project, Wikidata is, and most article subjects in Wikipedia are represented by objects in Wikidata. It's quite easy to use Wikidata for this type of query. I do it so rarely that I must re-learn the details each time, but its very quick (five minutes?) and easy to re-learn. -Arch dude (talk) 11:27, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GSKN81. It's a little hard to understand, but I think that what you are saying is that you want to add a translation of Pager#Attack on Hezbollah to an article in another language Wikipedia; and from your global contributions, I'm guessing that it is to the article bn:পেজার.
As far as English Wikipedia is concerned, you may do this: the only requirement is that you attribute the source when you make your edit - either in your edit summary, or on the Bengali article's talk page. See WP:TFOLWP.
What you need to do in the Bengali article, and why you may have difficulty, we can't help you with: you'll need to ask at Bn Wikipedia - try bn:উইকিপিডিয়া:সাহায্যকেন্দ্র. ColinFine (talk) 14:43, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Place names in Valencia, Eastern Spain

[edit]

I just wanted to check whether we can use Valencian exonyms (see Corpus Toponímic Valencià) in the Spanish-speaking regions of the Valencian Community. I think we could since Valencian is official in the whole Valencian territory, and the same happens with Spanish in the Valencian-speaking regions of the Valencian Community (i.e. we use both forms despite official local denominations, see Benissa in Valencian and Benisa in Spanish). What's the recommendation by admins and Wikipedia? — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 00:44, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm thhat user (as you can see half of my IP matches) but where I am now it's just mobile Internet that keeps changing the IP on a daily basis.
I would say there a very few examples like Torrevieja where this doesn't apply. Valencian has never been spoken in Torrevieja and no one says Torrevella except for some Catalan books.
For Spanish names in Valencian-predominant areas, we know Spanish is still used and many English or foreign sources also use the Spanish name, even if it's not official. Calpe or Jávea are more common from miles away in any language (other than Valencian/Catalan) than Calp or Xàbia despite these last ones being official.
As you saw I didn't try to delete anything from your recent changes including the duality of Valencian names. I am from Valencia too and I like that detailed info. But for Torrevieja honestly, I would say it's an exception. As Valencian has never been spoken there. 84.125.73.65 (talk) 10:11, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Torrevieja is in the Valencian Community (where Valencian is official), the same than Benissa is in Spain (where Spanish is official), therefore both towns could use an exonym in the correspondent language. The name Torrevella is used by other Valencians, similar to Benisa is used by those who use Spanish. It's a way or matter of respect to both linguistic realities in the Valencian Community. See also Alghero in Italy where Catalan is the local language, Sardinian regional and Italian national. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 11:06, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose to this change. The AVL or the IEC have invented these names. Orihuela was once historically Valencian speaking, Torrevieja was never. No one says "Torrevella" except for pro-catalanism Catalonian newspapers and the AVL, you won't find an official source saying that.
Torrevieja was settled only with Spanish-speaking people and it has been like that since the town started to exist. I have left both "Oriola" and "Torrevella" terms as a good willing gesture but they can never be in the infobox nor either in bold text. Even if Valencian is official in the entire Valencian Community, it's NOT in Torrevieja or Orihuela (amongst other places) as public workers here don't require to speak Valencian as in Valencia, for example.
The difference with Valencian speaking towns is that people also speak Spanish there. But in Spanish speaking towns (especially around Murcia) no one speaks Valencian. It's not even mandatory at schools. I'm a Vega Bajense so I know how it is. Vega Bajense (talk) 11:22, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vega Bajense, those names have not been invented by the AVL, they exist because Valencian is official in all the Valencian Community and the local people in non-traditional Valencian speaking areas have the right and choice to learn Valencian. As I said it's a matter of respect to keep those names, and the same occurs in traditional Valencian-speaking areas with Spanish (like Benissa). Why can't the Valencian name go in the infobox on the "other_name" category (and not in native_name)? — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 19:38, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
People have the right to choose any language they want. True. The difference in Vega Baja del Segura is that Valencian has the same value as French, German or Chinese. It's not even a mandatory school subject, unlike English. This happens in all of the Vega Baja except for Guardamar del Segura, where Valencian is co-official.
I have left your edits on Orihuela just without the bolding and without including it in the infobox (if you want to, wait for a consensus as that wasn't there) I have left your edits in the page Vega Baja except for that biased map made by a Wikipedia Commons user who claims himself as a "Catalan Nationalist" in his own Wikipedia profile.
But about the Torrevieja issue I have deleted it all as per WP:BRD and let's reach a consensus first. I'm from La Vega Baja. I know my history and what my people think. To let you know, many people here don't even like to be Valencian. There are political movements and associations to make La Vega Baja even another separate province in Spain, even outside from Alicante.
This is just random info but I know Orihuela used to he Valencian speaking. Torrevieja was settled only by Spanish-speaking people (including many Murcian fishermen, actually) and has never been bilingual. You can even go there and check that the local people have almost the same accent as eastern people from Murcia.
Do you want to include "Torrevella" which is a term locally hated by the people of Torrevieja? (I can find even local newspaper sources for this) okay, let's reach a consensus. But don't put it again as that wasn't the stable version of the page. I would agree with it only if you put it unbolded on the lead and with the IPA name in a small note. But putting "Torrevella" there like it's a relevant or a local/regional name... that doesn't make any sense. Vega Bajense (talk) 22:04, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are mixing facts, English, French and German are not official in the Valencian Community, whereas Valencian is. Why would it be hated a language in Torrevieja? That doesn't sound right. Anyway, it doesn't make much difference having it in bold or not. But the IPA should be in the lead as the names aren't too long just like as other Valencian towns display it. It also should be included the Valencian exonym in the infobox as other_name. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 01:15, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sonny Dykes

[edit]

Sonny Dykes did not some in first in the big 12 on his first season, he lost the championship game to K-State, K-State come in first but TCU did go to the College Playoffs and they did beat Michigan and they then lost to Georgia. 184.187.46.159 (talk) 20:01, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you have an improvement to suggest to an article, the best place to make your suggestion is the talk page of the article (here, Talk:Sonny Dykes). Your argument will be more persuasive if you can point to a reliable published source that contains the information - otherwise anybody who decides to implement your suggestion will need to go looking for a source themselves. Photo citation corrected by me, then changed back to incorrect caption by someone afterwards for Love (band).

[edit]

I changed the citation of the picture to correctly show Arthur Lee on the left side of the photo in the Wiki page of Love (band). And someone reverted the caption back, incorrectly showing Arthur Lee at photo top.  How does one address this issue satisfactorily so it describes the correct order of personnel? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Love_%28band%29&oldid=prev&diff=1218442654 Packzap (talk) 20:37, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Packzap It appears that you and the other editor disagree. The next thing is to talk to them at Talk:Love (band). TSventon (talk) 21:32, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Packzap: Wikipedia content is based on reliable published sources. In this case the original version at File:LOVE60s.png#filehistory actually had names in the image. Here is a better version. It's still hard to read the precise names but it has to be John Echols at the left and Arthur Lee at top. That's what someone reverted back to [3] after you had changed away from it. You will need an excellent source if you claim an official promotional image for the band mixed up their names. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:37, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, the positions of the names on that promotional photo are ambiguous. One thing that is certain is that Arthur Lee was African-American. Looking that that photo, it is pretty clear which of the five men was African-American. I think that Packzap has a point. Cullen328 (talk) 00:22, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well it's ridiculous to assume one scant promotional image by the record company is labeled correctly when all other sources show the person on the left is Arthur Lee, and thus this photo is labeled incorrectly. Just see the wiki (and photo) for Arthur Lee himself, or the thousands of images of the man from reputable sources like Getty images, https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee, and it's plain as day that the musician Arthur Lee (of African descent) is not captioned correctly in the Wiki photo of the band he lead - Love. I don't understand why this is so difficult to corroborate? Packzap (talk) 00:39, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: The only ambiguous position is the top name but when the other four are clear, the top name has to refer to the top person. The bottom name John Echols couldn't possibly be meant for the top person. They are both part African-American. In [4] Johnny Echols says "Arthur and I were young and headstrong, having been raised in bi-racial families". The image [5] looks like a photomontage of different photos in different light conditions with the backgrounds cut out. @Packzap: See what happens if Johnny Echols is added to your search: https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee-johnny-echols. They look rather similar to me when they are actually in the same photo, but Johnny Echols looks more like the bottom person. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:24, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Small Text on Mobile Device with Desktop Mode and Web Browser

[edit]

Earlier today, when I am logged in using my alternate mobile account (User:McClenon mobile), using desktop mode with Google Chrome, my display has gone to small type that is not easy to read (with a good prescription for computer vision glasses) and is sometimes difficult to touch in the right place. What may have been accidentally set, and how can I restore normal size text? I looked at Preferences, and don't see anything that sets the screen small. I have tried Mobile View, and that doesn't help. It is still small, and besides I am in Mobile View, which I don't like (just as User:Cullen328 doesn't like it). I tried logging on from my desktop computer as McClenon mobile, and I am seeing a normal display for the full-size monitor that I use with my real desktop computer. If I read the news online, using Google Chrome, it displays the news pages in normal size. What would I have accidentally set that causes small type to display on a mobile device using Desktop View and a web browser? (When I am using my mobile device to view and edit Wikipedia, I always use Desktop View and a web browser.) Robert McClenon (talk) 21:40, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: It might be the appearance settings on the right-hand side of the screen; if you've collapsed it in the past, the menu should be hiding behind the icon at the top of the page. There are some radio buttons that let you adjust the size of text. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:10, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a consensus on how to format possessive links?

[edit]

Is it preferred to format possessive links like The King's or The King's?

I've read through the MOS, the full linking page, and several help pages. None of them seem to mention the format, and I've definitely seen both used on major pages.

Stormdew (talk) 00:36, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely use The King's – not for style reasons, but for technical reasons. The first one links to the article titled King, and the second to King's. As it happens, King's is a redirect to the disambiguation page Kings, but in general it won't exist; e.g., Wikipedian and Wikipedian's. jlwoodwa (talk) 02:26, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility is The King's, linking to "King" but link-coloring "King's". But I'd almost always prefer The King's. Maproom (talk) 06:41, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Stormdew There is discussion of this at Help:Link. One consideration (mentioned on that page) is that Batman's renders as Batman's, where the apostrophe s isn't in blue. Piping is needed if you want Batman's and you do have to beware that without the pipe the target page may not be what you want, as in the King example. Mjroots, skills, or anyway predilections, include the shovelling in of great volumes of trivia. The body text of this article delivers such nuggets as:
• David Middleton "attended the wedding" of "his second cousin, once removed"
• Peter Middleton "met his granddaughter's fiancé", who (later, of course) "attended his funeral"
• Olive Middleton "attended society balls" at the home of a "daughter of her second cousin"
• The service at the funeral" of J.W. Middleton "was read by the [...] vicar of St Chad's Church where his son Arthur Middleton had been a regular attender and had his own funeral service in 1907"
For mysterious persons of considerable public interest (such as Shakespeare or Pynchon), yes. But here this looks to me like mere barrel-scraping for something to say. -- Hoary (talk) 23:41, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Where to discuss category loop

[edit]

I noticed a category loop. Specifically, Category:PrimatologyCategory:Biological anthropologyCategory:Human biologyCategory:HumansCategory:HomininaCategory:HomininiCategory:HomininaeCategory:HominidaeCategory:ApesCategory:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxaCategory:PrimatesCategory:PrimatologyCategory:Biological anthropology ⊂…, which has length twelve. (There are also overlapping loops, such as one using Category:Biological anthropologyCategory:AnthropologyCategory:Humans instead of Category:Biological anthropologyCategory:Human biologyCategory:Humans.) Because I recall that category loops are discouraged, I figured that I would bring it up in an appropriate talk page in order to create a discussion about how to fix it. (I personally favor changing Category:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxa to Category:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxa, but I can see other users preferring alternatives.) My first idea was Portal talk:Biology, but I got a message saying that I shouldn't post there because pages in the Portal talk namespace are not watched by many people. Where would be an appropriate place to discuss how to fix this category loop? Care to differ or discuss with me? The Nth User 07:31, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes

[edit]

I sometimes have, within the same article, multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes. Is there a way to do this without repeating the complete reference? I recall a recent notification about a new referencing tool, designed to support multiple references to the same source, with variations. I can't remember what differences it's designed to support - it may be just differing page numbers. Is that tool ready for use? Is there some other way to do what I need? Thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 11:26, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is the best way to handle a major restructuring of an article?

[edit]

I'm planning to restructure an article. This will involve multiple editing steps, during which the article will be a mess. What is the best way to do this? Should I copy the article to Draft space, do the restructuring, then select the text of the Draft, copy it, and paste it into the live article, replacing the existing text? A disadvantage of that approach is that the individual editing steps would not be visible in the article's history. Is there a better way? Thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 11:32, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can use In use for big editing sessions and Under construction in between sessions, but don't worry too much about article history if you're the only one making the edits. Having a few big edits in the article history has advantages as well as disadvantages, Misha Wolf, so break up the edits in a way that makes sense to you, whether that's several smaller edits or fewer bigger ones.
