Travel bubble flights

[edit]

Several flights to and from BOM are currently (October 2021) operated only under the air transport bubble program [1], but there does not appear to be agreement regarding the inclusion of these flights in the destination list. I believe we should seek consensus on this question instead of repeatedly adding and removing flights from the list.

WP:AIRPORT-CONTENT does not appear to contain a policy on travel bubble flights. At least some of the flights are operated on a regular schedule and are listed by airlines with no distinction to all other flights, suggesting that they should be included in the list. For instance, United Airlines flight to Newark is listed by the airline as any other flight would be [2], and appears to operate consistently every day [3]

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International AirportMumbai International Airport – The current title is an extremely long and an uncommon title violating WP:COMMONNAME, WP:CONCISION and WP:NATURALNESS. Wikipedia requires that the official name should not be used (unless it fulfills the criterion at WP:Article titles). If we were to see the usage in news media, "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport" gives only 300 hits, "Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport" also gives only 300 hits, while "Mumbai International Airport" gives 10,100 hits and "Mumbai Airport" gives 21,100 hits, showing the prevalence of "Mumbai International Airport" and "Mumbai Airport" in news media, and it thus fulfilling the criterion at WP:COMMONNAME. Besides the current name doesn't even show up in ngrams because of its extremely low usage in published sources. "Mumbai International Airport" is much more natural and recognisable to an average reader, and more readers are likely to search for it. Mumbai Airport is good enough too. @PadFoot2008: Umm... On similar lines, we should have New York International Airport as the article name, but it is a redirect, while John F. Kennedy International Airport is the article. I'm quite sure that "New York" is much more popular than "John F. Kennedy". Moves like these need a centralised discussion/consensus at WP:AVIATION or atleast WP:INB. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:19, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk, please see WP:OTHERCONTENT, if one article is incorrect that doesn't we should follow suit and make other similar articles incorrect as well. Besides, that's only a C-Class Article and is not GA. PadFoot (talk) 13:10, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, this RM is listed on both WikiProjects mentioned under their RM listings. I've still linked to it on the talk pages, regardless. SmittenGalaxy | talk! 06:16, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it is a bad idea to use ngrams in this case, as what published books use for this airport is hardly going to be beneficial for WP:COMMONNAME, compared to its coverage in news media. PadFoot (talk) 20:03, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DangalOh (talk) 03:18, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DangalOh, It is not the common name certainly. And to build a new airport in Mumbai, it would take at least a decade. There are no operational international airports apart from CSMIA as of now in Mumbai. Besides it is certainly the primary topic and pretty clear enough, or else why would it redirect to this page. PadFoot (talk) 12:04, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CSMIA may not be the common name, but it is the official name of the airport.  LeoFrank  Talk 14:09, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Adding more to Arnav Bhate's reasons. "Chhatrapati" and "Maharaj" are both titles with close to same meaning. If "Maharaj" were to be dropped its makes no sense to keep "Chhatrapati". And maybe please don't decide the title by the measure of "hits", as an average user tends to type a short form of the name rather than full name. And as a local resident most people would refer the airport as the current name. Status quo. Varad (Talk|Contribs) 14:03, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Oppose: We cannot keep hitting on WP:COMMONNAME and WP:GHITS for airport names. Each airport is addressed by several names, but what is important is the Official name of the airport. This is the name of the airport approved by agencies like ICAO/IATA and the country's Aviation Authority. Having said that, I prefer keeping the current title as it is deemed the official name. Though Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport also holds good.  LeoFrank  Talk 14:19, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, WP:GHITS is for notability fallacies regarding deletion discussions; it even says Although using a search engine like Google can be useful in determining how common or well-known a particular topic is, which is relevant in RM discussions about article titles. Additionally, they weren't just specifically using Google, but news and news articles specifically vs purely Google search. You can verify this by simply searching both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and binding it to search for only this phrase by using quotes; the first gives just over 3.7 million results and the latter about 575,000 results. SmittenGalaxy | talk! 18:02, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly the point you missed to understand from my statement. Each and every entity refers to an airports in different ways, so very likely you see a lot of GHITS for a particular name of the airport. Hence, we should stick to official names of airports rather than spending time looking at the weightage each and every name has.  LeoFrank  Talk 13:10, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
