Criteria for inclusion/exclusion

Current sports events (and its archived versions) has a defined policy to help editors decide whether or not an event merits inclusion.

Include these team events:

• International competitive team events (not friendlies)
• National, regional or global club knock-out championships finals (not earlier rounds)
• National, regional or global league championship final results (not details of every league match)

Include these individual events:

• Recognized major competition final results (not details of each individual contest)
• For sports without recognized majors, results of competitions with global interest in the English-speaking world

Other events to include:

• Record-breaking events
• Important news of global interest in sports politics
• Important awards for people in sport, including participants and administrators

All events should include an external link to a source article.

Events that don't meet the inclusion criteria may be removed. If you disagree with the criteria, please discuss below. Thanks!

Creation discussion moved from Village Pump

On the eve of the French Open and Stanley Cup happenings, I was wondering if we could make a Current Sports News page, different from the 2004 in sports page that we already have, to cover major events that otherwise might not be covered by Sports in 2004. I watch Sportscenter a lot, I could manage the page well. We could put it on Main Page beat where Current Events and Recenth deaths are at. Antonio Long One Martin

I don't particularyly care for the idea. The main is already full (too full, in some people's opinions), and I'd rather have the 4 sections we already have rather than sports. →Raul654 09:45, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)

It would probably be possible to do United States current events, United Kingdom current events and perhaps others too for those events that aren't quite worthy of a global audience. I doubt any of them would deserve main page links though. Pcb21| Pete 10:59, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I support Antonio's suggestion. It'd reduce the load on Current Events, and "More news | Recent deaths | Sports news" would fit quite happily in the ITN box on the Main Page (and, if it's decided that that's not the case), it could be usefully linked from Current Events). The Olympics and EuroFooty are just round the corner, too. –Hajor 19:17, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I like the idea. I was going to add a bit about Smarty Jones losing @ Belmont to Current Events last weekend, but (a) I wasn't sure if I was even allowed, and (b) I wasn't sure if people would think it "important" enough. I have no problems with a link as suggested by Hajor. But I think an extra box on the front page is too much, and I am personally not interested at all in sport news. -- Chris 73 | Talk 22:50, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Policy discussion

I think we need a declared policy for what merits inclusion in this article and, perhaps more importantly, what doesn't. I've put a first draft above: please edit as you see fit, and add any comments in this discussion section (to keep the policy itself free of discussion). IMHO, I think the current article follows the policy pretty well: I'd remove the Arena Football League events as they're semi-finals. Where the policy currently fails is with NASCAR and Formula 1, I think. I'd welcome improvements. -- Avaragado 08:58, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I actually like the idea of having all the different playoff scores on this page, rather than saving entries just for the final events of sports. They all shouldn't get massive entries, but a mention of who won each game I think would be nice. I say this because a lot of the entries for the various finals already list playoff information (see Super Bowl XXXVIII) and I think it'd be nice to

Early on in a playoffs, I think they should be bunched together to conserve space, like:

• • MLB AL Divisional Championships:
    • Game 2 Rangers 5-3 Red Sox - Hank Blalock homers in eighth to put Rangers up 5-3 and take a 2-0 series lead.
    • Game 2 Twins 12-1 Yankees - Brad Radke throws no-hitter through six to tie the series 1-1.

Anyways, I don't think we need to worry too much about all these events going on right now. June is just a busy month for sport and Sundays are doubly busy. By mid-July, I think there will be days where we'll be struggling to find events worth mentioning.

As far as things like golf, tennis and auto racing are concerned, they mostly only happen once a week (at best), so I'd say mention the winners when the event is over on Sunday with an event summary if something additionally notable happened. Major circuits only (PGA and LPGA, not Nike or Amateur tours in golf - well, U.S. Amateur Open winner could be mentioned, only Nextel Cup in NASCAR, not Busch Series or Craftsman Truck, etc.). Great idea

I just want to meion that I think this Current sports events page is a great idea. I hope someday it can be included or linked to on the main page.
